Particles and Fields Seminar

  DATE: 05-12-2011

  TIME: 14:00pm (Mon)

PLACE: Physics building (#54) room 207

TITLE:
Neutrino oscillations and short transit times

SPEAKER:
Prof. Larry Horwitz, Tel Aviv University

ABSTRACT/COMMENTS:
The Stueckelberg formulation of a manifestly covariant relativistic
classical and quantum mechanics is briefly reviewed and it is shown
that in this framework a simple model exists for which, for systems
with flavor oscillations, beam transit times can be shortened. This
phenomenon could account for the OPERA result providing very short-lived
boosts during the transit of a beam of neutrinos for which the speed
is almost everywhere less than light speed. In principle, such effects
could occur for the K and B systems, but would be harder to detect
