Lasers Seminar - TODAY

  DATE: 06-12-2011

  TIME: 3:30pm (Tue)

PLACE: Physics building (#54) room 207

TITLE:
Universal few-body physics with ultracold atoms

SPEAKER:
Lev Khaykovich, Bar-Ilan University, Physics Department, Ramat Gan, Israel

ABSTRACT/COMMENTS:
Low energy few-body physics with resonantly enhanced two-body interactions is a fundamental quantum mechanical problem, known to manifest universal properties.
In this limit the scattering process can be described independently from the details of the short-range interparticle potential. For three interacting particles universality is associated with a ladder of weakly bound triatomic states called Efimov trimers which exist even when the two-body interactions support none. Ultracold atoms have developed into the prime platform for the experimental studies of Efimov physics and associated few-body phenomena. In this talk I will review the basic ideas along with the fast experimental developments in the field focusing on a bosonic Li system which unique properties allowed us to address a number of cornerstone questions in a series of recent experiments.
