Adsorption and Boundary Lubrication of Lubricous Additives under Controlled Surface Potentials

Abstract:
Active control of friction and wear is an attractive topic in tribology. It has been demonstrated that adsorption and desorption of polar additives on metallic surfaces can be manipulated by tuning the liquid/solid interface potential with an electrochemical method, resulting in substantial changes in boundary friction and wear. Some examples of the potential-controlled boundary lubrication systems include ionic surfactant aqueous solutions, ionic liquids in propylene carbonate oil or in diethyl succinate (DES) ester and surfactant-coated CuS nanoparticles dispersed in DES. The adsorption and boundary lubrication behavior of the lubricous additives have been investigated under various potential conditions by using electrochemical QCM, ellipsometer, AFM and ball-on-flat friction tester. It has been found that imposing of an external electric potential can also enhance the tribofilm formation of zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates (ZDDP) on steel surfaces. A gradient distribution of boundary friction along a uniform electrode surface can be realized by using the bipolar electrode technique.


Biography:
Dr. Yonggang Meng is a Professor in mechanical engineering, and serves as the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Tribology (SKLT), Tsinghua University, China. Before he joined the SKLT in 1990, he obtained his Master and Ph.D degrees in mechanical engineering from Kumamoto University, Japan, in 1986 and 1989 respectively. He is the author or co-author of over 160 peer-reviewed papers and 4 book chapters. His research area covers engineering tribology, surface and interface sciences and micro/nanomanufacturing.
