Dining with black holes: Tidal disruption events, gravitational waves and stellar dynamics

Prof. Hagai Perets, Dept. of Physics, Technion

The interactions of black holes with companion stars and compact objects can give rise to catastrophic events. Stars can be disrupted and produce explosive flares, compact objects can merge through energetic emission of gravitational waves, and stellar binaries can be sheared, ejecting stars at extreme velocities. The last few years gave rise to a large number of novel observations, including the detection of gravitational wave sources and novel candidates for tidal disruption events. The newly developed survey and instruments are likely to further push these fields forward in the coming years. On the theoretical side the dynamical and stellar evolutionary processes leading to these type of violent interactions are extensively studied. The new frontiers opened with direct observations of such events allow for a new look and direct constraint on the models for the formation and origin of the progenitors of these violent events. I will discuss these new frontiers and novel ideas
for the origins of current and new types of events from the interactions with black holes at all scales. Refreshments are served at 15:15.
