Giving a Twist to Multiple Laser Beam Alignment

Yair Yifrach, Deoartment of Physics, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

Understanding the nature and dynamics of hydrogen bonds has been a long-standing goal. To shed light on these issues we study the induced photophysics of the hydrated clusters of model systems, functioning in biological systems as neurotransmitters. As part of the preliminary investigations we applied the method of ionization-loss stimulated Raman spectroscopy (ILSRS), a method requiring alignment of multiple laser beams, usually a difficult and time-consuming task. Hence, a facilitated approach for spatial overlap of the involved laser beams (ultraviolet, pump and Stokes) with the molecular beam, based on spatial and velocity map imaging, was proposed and demonstrated for the 2-phenylethylamine (PEA) monomer and its water cluster (PEA–H2O). Following this procedure, measurements of velocity distributions and two-photon ionization (R2PI) and ILSR spectra of the probed species became easily accessible. The velocity distributions provided an unprecedented advantage, allowing
immediate classification of the bands in the R2PI spectrum of PEA, corresponding to the molecular ion or being a result of parent cluster photofragmentation
